The frilled lizard-like monsters are Sunzars, little reptilian beasties that aren't too strong individually, but attack in large swarms with relentless attack rates.

Icicle down the back with a neck ring so he can't just remove it. Leave, wait a half hour, then come back with a cup of hot cocoa and see if he wants to talk Then.
