My sister asked me what purpose Bloodfinders serve in the Archaiean universe, so here's a random aside.
Besides helping people find long-lost brothers/sisters/parents/cousins, Isaac is also able to prove blood relations between people, which is especially useful for royal bloodlines and other random situations. Think of him as the fantasy equivalent to a DNA tester, though he is also able to locate people depending. :)
It may not be a very exciting job, but Isaac's Bloodfinding can be useful!
This is just some extra background, but the ability to see curses and/or enchantments, as you put it, is one of the innate skills possessed by the Anjelian race. :) Isaac is a bit more sensitive than his brethren, is all!
Definitely, which is probably why Isaac is pretty happy to be in a 'hidden village' (though I suppose not-very-hidden now). The Anjelian race has a history I will hopefully get the chance to delve into a bit more in future chapters, but as a random aside, Anjelians tend to remove themselves from human company and dislike getting too involved with human affairs.
As for Cain's 'walking contradiction'... well, we'll see. ;)
Yay clues.
Ok, able hates him. We knew that. We also knew he was somewhat of a contradiction just because of his name/ the clues we are getting of his past contradicting with his almost too innocent and kind personality.
Maybe he did something he preceves to be horrable but was for the good/unavoidable and so his sole is torn with guilt.
That or he did something so bad that he was banished and decided to start over by "joining the church" so to speak aka becoming a White Mage so he can atone for his sins. The problem with that theory is two fold. If he just became a white mage relitivly recently how is he so good? Also just his personality... unless he's just a really good actor/ what everyone takes as kindness is really just great guilt in trying to make up for his past wrong.
Or perhaps he IS evil and the curse is actually sealing that evil away making him unnaturally good and thus unbalanced resulting in the hampering of his magic use and completely preventing him from using anything but White Magic. That gets in to abit of a "yin-yang" aproch, but hey it would make sence.
On a diffrent note, I can deffintly imagion Bloodfinders to be quite useful. Besides all the stuff you menchioned with royalty there's also just the simple but much more common "who's that father" test.
One would also simply be a darn good tracker. Looking for a criminal on the run but all you can find is his mother/sibling/child who is innocent? Use a Bloodfinder! Nowhere to hide now, and you'd probably save money paying all those people to scorer the woods for days looking for him. I meen, what if Madoc had a Bloodfinder? Locke would be screwed. ;)
Also, one would be a good guard. Assuming they are all as sensitive to emotion and darkness now you can screen the people coming to see the king for maliciousness. Not comprehensive defence by any stretch, but maybe a key component of a larger system.
On that note it could give you a competitive edge in high level negotiations (say ambassadors to kingdoms) if someone on your team was as sensitive as Isaac here and could give you a glimps of your opponents intentions and state of mind.
Those are some great ideas O_O technically, yes, Isaac's Bloodfinding ability could be very helpful. His sensitivity regarding auras is a 'race skill' (in RPG-speak), though. :P
As an Anjelian, however, despite how useful Isaac's skills may be, he acts aloof when it comes to human affairs. Well, for the most part. It depends. :)
It really hopes up a lot of abilities, especially if they can sense things like curses or enchantments.
Cain's mystery deepens... Can't wait to see what it's all about.
As for Cain's "walking contradiction", well, he probably killed everybody. Contradiction of life is death right?

Idk. Still need more clues I guess.

The greatest contradiction of all:
a ginger with a soul.
"Cain, in the case of 6-year old Cain Jr... You Are NOT the father!"
Could be exciting. (sorry for the necroposting)
And lolol, do we see Cain dancing to celebrate then? :P
